Toronto, ON – Looking to make an impact on the fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Meagan And Amanda Damota, current medical students and ambassadors for The Mikey Network, will be producing and donating non-surgical masks to The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).

With over 100 masks set to be delivered this Tuesday and with more in production, the students were inspired by Canadian chief medical officer Dr. Theresa Tam who suggested that wearing a non-medical facial mask could slow the spread of COVID-19, along with the previously prescribed measures of vigilant hand-washing, social distancing and self-isolation.

“Having a child in the hospital is undeniably stressful and difficult; we want to relieve some of the stressors that many of these families have to endure,” says Meagan Damota. “By producing and donating these non-surgical masks we hope to help the incredible staff and families stay protected against COVID-19.”

Since its inception, The Mikey Network has worked tirelessly to create public awareness and provide education about heart-healthy lifestyles. One of the only organizations to provide remote training, The Mikey Network offers two Apps, one where students can garner volunteer hours learning how to use a defibrillator while the other provides informative webinars and hands on training. A 17-year-old girl recently saved a life using the skills learned on the app.

Working closely with SickKids through The Mikey Kids program, The Mikey Network provides portable automated external defibrillator’s (AED) to high-risk children who are in danger of sudden cardiac arrest. Having access to the life-saving AED technology helps to give children, their families, and the medical staff at SickKids peace of mind.

“Meagan and Amanda have played an integral part of The Mikey Network and we are excited to be part of this amazing endeavour,” says Eva Naumovski, President of The Mikey Network. “The Mikey Network is a proud supporter of SickKids through The Mikey Kids program and we are honoured to be able to provide a helping hand.”
