7 minimalist home décor pieces you can buy locally

When given an open space, like in a new home, many of us find that our first instinct is to fill it up. But what if there was another way? When furnishing your home, the minimalist approach allows you to optimize your space and minimize clutter without sacrificing style.

Francis Jourdain believed that “one can furnish a room very luxuriously by taking out furniture rather than putting it in.” Essentially, this means that while furnishing a space, less is more.

But that doesn’t mean that you are limited to just a futon and a lamp. Many furniture designers are keeping minimalism in mind and creating pieces that are space-conscious yet functional. Minimalism is not a new idea; pieces deriving from the concept range from classic to ultra-modern, so you can still find something tailored to your taste that fits the minimalist aesthetic.

So if you’re looking to furnish your new home or just revive your current abode, check out some of our favourite minimalist home décor available around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

1) Cairo Star Cut Concrete Clock

Despite its exotic name, the Cairo Star (top image) is made locally by Toronto craftsmen. The clock is fashioned after a diamond, from the intricate faceting to the unique design of each individual clock. You can find the Cairo Star on King Street at Made Design’s showroom.

2) Degree End Table

A room is not complete without a giant bottle cork, right? Designed by Patrick Norguet, the Degree doubles as a table and a small storage unit. The look is unique and the storage is discrete, but the cork coating is neutral enough to look good in any space. You can find the Degree at Kiosk Furniture and Accessories on King Street.

3) Hot-Rolled Cube

Modern yet timeless, the Cube can be used as a table or just appreciated as an artistic element of your space. Each cube is uniquely made in Canada and can be found at Style Garage.

4) The OK Light

Minimalist home décor

Konstantin Grcic’s creation is pendant lighting reimagined. Despite drawing inspiration from the Parentesi Lamp, the OK goes beyond the traditional light bulb and uses a uniquely designed light source instead. Suspended from the ceiling, the OK can be rotated 360º, adjusted to any desired height and dimmed to adapt to the ambiance. The light is available in black, white and yellow and can be found at Kiosk.

5) Azumaya Hand Broom + Dust Pan

Minimalist home décor

Big, bulky cleaning supplies can take up lots of useful storage space. But although the Azumaya is small, it is still efficient. The hand broom and cedar dustpan work together to tidy surfaces with ease and the two can be attached for easy storing. The Azumaya is available for purchase at Mjolk, located in the Junction.

6) Bodega White Cabinet

Minimalist home décor

Spanning almost six feet across, this cabinet by Black Rooster provides ample storage within the minimalist aesthetic. Still, it is far from boring with a subtle white wave pattern and a bold brass base.

7) Body Fit Cushion

Minimalist home décor

Although it looks like the average beanbag chair, Muji’s Body Fit Cushion is so much more. Horizontally, the cushion wraps around your torso to make for comfortable working, leisure or rest. Vertically, it spreads around the body, making it ideal for napping. The innovative design stretches to adjust to different shapes and sizes but morphs back to its sturdy form once you get up. You can even change the cushion cover as your style evolves.
