One of Canada's Biggest Homebuilders is set for a Big Move!

By Lucas on Nov 27, 2012

For years, rumours of a plunge into the Toronto high-rise market have been floating around about one of the biggest low-rise developers in Canada, Mattamy Homes. They even hired Jeanhy Shim of Streetcar Developments to start developing their high-rise portfolio, but they still haven’t released anything. Well, our friends over at Urbanation are reporting that Mattamy Homes is set to start the development process for their first Toronto condominium project at 422-430 Roncesvalles Ave. The proposal calls for a 10-storey tower, with 130 units, and of course, retail at grade. The condo tower will also feature two levels of underground parking. The site is currently home to an assortment of low-rise businesses and a surface parking lot.

Roncesvalles Village has been really moving forward recently. It’s within a reasonable distance of the downtown core, the GO Station is within minutes, and there are a number of quaint shops and restaurants. Roncesvalles’ desirability was illustrated by Somerset Group of Companies and Torbel Group’s success at Wallace Walk; they set records at their grand opening.

Sometimes, in areas like this, height is an issue, but there is a building of practically the same size across the street from the site. The one hiccup, and we have seen it in the past with other condo projects in the city, is that the site is located right beside a church. If Mattamy works with the church, and we expect they will, we can’t see the church giving any push back against the project.

What are your thoughts on this potential development?
