Developers and Artists Fill City Hall to Learn More About Art on Construction Hoarding

On Feb. 26, WorkSight transformed the City Hall Rotunda into a construction site! Okay, so there weren’t any cranes or other heavy machinery, but the hoarding was up, and it looked amazing.

Over 100 people, including developers, artists, councillors, and interested city residents attended the WorkSight event to learn more about getting art on construction hoarding. Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam is responsible for putting the companies Wysp and PATCH together to bring WorkSight to City Hall. As councillor of Ward 27, one of the most development heavy wards in the city, it is very important to Wong-Tam that developers start doing their part to beautify the streets of Toronto. Construction sites are active for three to five years, and when that hoarding comes out to the sidewalk, it would be great to see a piece of art coming with it!

“Imagine if Toronto was internationally recognized for it’s public art, and part of the credit belonged to the people building the city. That’s a realistic goal for me - a realistic future. That’s why I’m so excited to collaborate with Councillor Wong-Tam and the PATCH team to make WorkSight a huge success,” said Andrew Patterson, Vice-President of Wysp.

PATCH recently completed an art project for future hoarding at Tridel’s Alexandra Park revitalization. They brought the community together and created a stunning mural, which will be installed once construction has commenced. “It gave people who are good at art a chance to express themselves, and gave other people who didn’t know they were good a chance to realize they were,” said Savannah Lavallee, a 15 year old involved in the Alexandra Park hoarding project.

WorkSight presented two different ways of approaching art on hoarding:

1) Get the community involved to create a mural.

2) Hire a local artist to design a mural or the entire hoarding.

For either option, the folks at WorkSight can be your guide! If you’re interested in learning more about how you can have beautiful hoarding for your next construction site and generate some buzz about your new project, contact WorkSight today!
