Hoarding Art at Camrost-Felcorp’s Yorkville Plaza

We recently headed up to the site of Camrost-Felcorp’s Yorkville Plaza at Avenue Road and Yorkville Avenue in Toronto to check out the new art installation along the project’s hoarding.

Hoarding art at Yorkville Plaza

In 2011, Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam of Ward 27 Toronto Centre-Rosedale led a campaign to “beautify” Toronto’s streetscapes. Construction hoarding was singled out as a factor that invaded the public space, visually and sometimes physically. Wong-Tam’s campaign resulted in a rule that states that developers must display some kind of “public art” on their hoarding in order for the project to be approved.

The rule is still young and somewhat vague. We haven’t seen many developers jump at the chance to commission artists to produce special art for their projects’ construction hoarding, which is why Camrost-Felcorp’s initiative at their Yorkville Plaza site stands out so much.

Camrost-Felcorp hired artists Daniel Borins and Jennifer Marman to create a piece inspired by significant art movements in history, ranging from prehistoric times all the way into the near future.

Different symbols mark different movements, and each is represented by a number of coloured layers. The top layer represents the future and features a variety of housing styles. All the lower layers weave together, implying that we are building our future on a foundation created by an amalgamation of artistic passion (or at least that’s how we interpret it).

The art installation is fitting, considering Camrost-Felcorp is redeveloping an existing 31-storey hotel to become a part of Yorkville Plaza – literally building off a past aesthetic to create something new.

About Yorkville Plaza

In addition to the 31-storey building, Camrost-Felcorp is developing a new 39-storey mixed-use tower at Avenue Road and Cumberland Street, as well as a new 10-storey building along Yorkville Avenue. Yorkville Plaza will feature 883 residential suites, 278 parking spaces, and more than 38,000 square feet of non-residential space.

Suites at Yorkville Plaza range from 370 to 2,700 square feet, and will boast an extensive selection of the finest interior features and finishes. At Yorkville Plaza, you will experience the perfect mix of luxury and comfort, while being just an elevator ride away from one of Toronto’s most desirable districts.

We would like to thank Camrost-Felcorp for putting in that little extra effort to make Yorkville Plaza’s surrounding neighbourhood even more appealing. Everyone at Newinhomes.com is really looking forward to watching the project take shape.
