How to make your balcony feel like home

There are thousands of condo dwellers in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) not taking advantage of their outdoor space. And honestly, we understand why. The concrete floor, metal railing, and glass panelling doesn’t always make for the most inviting environment. But, if you feel this way, it’s mostly your fault because there are things you can do to make your balcony feel more like home!

1) Flooring

This may be the most important tip on the list. Flooring sets the stage for the rest of your outdoor decor. No matter what decor pieces you put on your balcony, if you still feel the cold, hard touch of concrete beneath your feet when you step outside, your balcony won’t feel like home.

The best option in our opinion is the outdoor flooring section at IKEA. There are different looks and colours from which to choose, and the pricing is pretty affordable (depending on the size of your balcony); you’re looking at $2.00 to $3.00 per square foot. There are also outdoor rugs available to add another touch of coziness.

2) Furniture

Try to avoid all plastic furniture. You likely wouldn’t put something cheap and plastic in your living room, so don’t put it on your balcony either. Yes, there are some exceptions, like the Eames style Eiffel chairs, but for the most part, you should avoid it.

We think wood or wicker are great options, and make sure you have outdoor cushions and pillows for every piece of furniture. If you have the space, a couch, two chairs, and a table are ideal, because it’s like a living room setup. If you do end up going the cheaper route with plastic, then make sure you put some of the money you saved towards high quality outdoor cushions!

3) Music

First of all, if you are investing in an outdoor sound system, you have to make sure your condo board allows it and you need to always be respectful of your neighbours. A high quality, wireless outdoor speaker is ideal. It can be tough to find a decent outdoor speaker, so you can always go with Sonos and make sure you don’t leave it out in the rain.

Once you’re good to go, make sure you have some summer inspired playlists; one for chilling under the sun, one for entertaining, and another for getting ready to hit the town for the evening.

4) Plants

Stock up on plants and make your balcony a jungle. Invest in some small trees, ferns, and cacti and other succulents. Make sure the plants you buy will do well with your balcony’s exposure. If you get a lot of sun, make sure you get plants that need it, and likewise if you’re well shaded throughout the day.

Look out at your bare concrete balcony. Now picture it with beautiful tiling, an area rug, cozy furniture with soft pillows, a bunch of lush greenery, and your favourite song is on. There are people living in condo buildings without balconies; if you have one, make sure you’re using it to its full potential!
