In order for any city to grow healthily, areas in need of redevelopment must be identified. The plan at Regent Park by The Daniels Corporation and Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) is a perfect example of breathing new life into an old neighbourhood. The most recent endeavour in Toronto is over in Alexandra Park.

The story behind Alexandra Park

Alexandra Park was originally built in 1968 and is named after a local municipal park, Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VIII. The area is framed by Dundas St. West, Spadina Ave., Queen St. West, and Bathurst St.

Alexandra Park consists mostly of social housing, and it’s been very difficult to keep it maintained. Plans have been in the works for years to redevelop the area, and have recently been approved. Now we have our first look at the future of Alexandra Park.

Tridel and TCHC’s plans for Alexandra Park

According to Teeple Architect's website, the TCHC is partnering with Tridel at Alexandra Park. The plans call for the demolition and replacement of 333 units and a refurbishing of 473. Through their partnership with Tridel, the City is also planning on building 1,540 new units. The goal is to take this aging social housing neighbourhood and turn it into something new and beautiful with modern-contemporary condominiums and townhomes.

Teeple’s renderings of Alexandra Park

As you can see, Teeple has designed something very special for Alexandra Park. Like most of Teeple’s projects, the design is aggressive, stepping away from your typical boutique condo aesthetic. This geometric approach is usually seen in higher end condos, like Picasso on Richmond or Seventy5 Portland. Tridel, TCHC, and Teeple should be applauded for their efforts here.

At this point, we are not sure when sales or groundbreaking will commence, but we are really looking forward to watching Alexandra Park make the transformation into a vibrant mixed-use community.
