Are the warm summer nights beckoning you outside? Summer is the time to enjoy a good book on an outdoor lounger or host an outdoor dinner party and replenish your Vitamin D. To make these moments more enjoyable, take time to freshen up your outdoor space!

I have researched some up-and-coming design trends to watch for as you tackle your next summer design project.

More natural wood

Showcase the natural beauty through form and simplicity in 2018 by incorporating natural wood into your outdoor design. This summer season’s trend is towards less manufactured materials and a re-introduction to the roots of design through unpainted timber. Clear finishes have replaced paint and stain to allow the wood grain to become the focal point. The result is a natural attraction that is subtle, warm and inviting.

Brick and stone patios

In addition to natural wood, expect to see an influx of cobblestone and brick on walkways and patios. Brick is a timeless material. It comes in a variety of shades, colours and arrangements to customize any space. Brick is low maintenance and adds character over time. Be on trend this summer by installing a cobblestone patio. Cobblestone combines form with function. It has a natural beauty, takes less maintenance than decks and won’t crack like slabs.

Outdoor family rooms

Patios and decks have always been popular additions, and for years we have been moving towards blending the transition from inside to outside. One of the latest trends in home design is completely expanding your living space outdoors. This means essentially creating an outdoor family room complete with quality materials. Go all out by incorporating comfortable couches, a television, sound system and outdoor kitchen. With everything you need in one place, you will never have to leave your backyard!

Combining water and fire elements

The addition of natural elements is a key point in design this summer. Water features are consistently a favourite backyard addition with the soothing sound of flowing water to manifest tranquility and peace. Fire pits and fireplaces are also on the rise in the design world. They add warmth and an ambient glow to your outdoor areas. What’s new this summer season is the incorporation of both water and fire features; working simultaneously to create a spectacular centrepiece.

Multi-level patios

We are seeing the construction of multi-level patios steadily increasing. Incorporating multiple levels creates an interesting composition in large backyards. Multi-levels define spaces for several areas of activities, which can lead to an interesting flow. For example; an upper deck may be used primarily for dining while a lower deck designated for lounging.

Whether you are a do-it-yourselfer or hiring a professional for your outdoor project, I hope these trends inspire you! Find more inspiration on our Outdoor Trend Spotting for 2018 Pinterest board.
