The top 5 interior design trends of 2016

With 2016 drawing to a close, I thought it would be timely to review a sampling of interior design trends that emerged this year in design. Did you buy a new home in 2016, or redecorate or remodel? If so, did you research the trends first to see what is hot in design? Although trend watching can be fun and informative, some trends last and some leave us quickly.

Here are my top five interior design picks for 2016 that will carry you well into 2017 and beyond:

1) Oversized light fixtures

In my design world, bigger is often better. That is the case with this year’s trend of oversized light fixtures. Form meets function in this pictured statement piece light fixture that provides the general lighting for the space in high style. For focal points, go big and get noticed!

2) Sectionals

From a design perspective, there was definitely a time when I steered away from specifying a sectional sofa. No longer! Sectional sofas deliver comfort and practicality and don’t need to compromise style savvy. There are numerous designs to choose from that provide great style. I love the relaxed look and feel of the sectional in this photo. What a welcomed gathering spot for friends and family!

3) Patterned tile

A lot of patterned tile showed up in design projects in 2016. I predict it will continue to provide design inspiration in the new year and beyond. Patterns on tile can provide interest and whimsy in small spaces such as powder room floors or as accents in bathrooms. I am presently specifying some patterned tile designs in a few of my 2017 projects.

4) Organic glamour

Organic glamour can deliver a sophisticated yet approachable look. By using Benjamin Moore’s colour of the year, simply white OC117, you can provide a classic backdrop. Combine a natural sisal type rug and off-white slipcovered sofa with a French inspired armoire. The designer then added a faux fur throw to complete the look. This organic design is timeless.

5) Serene and simple style

Are you looking for casual, relaxed design? This style works great for busy households. Calming colour or lack of colour make for a tranquil feel which can provide the perfect antidote for the ever busy lifestyle. An unmade bed can look like a purposeful design element when using beautiful bed treatments with quality fabrics. Mix in natural, textured fabrics, organic accessories and black and white art of varying sizes to complete this simple, serene style.
