BILD wins the Local Home Builders Association of the Year Award!

At the Ontario Home Builders’ Association (OHBA) conference, the highlight as usual was the Awards of Distinction; we posted about the winners earlier this week. Another award that was handed out was the Local Home Builders Association of the Year Award, which the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) took home!

There are 31 local home builders associations in Ontario, and OHBA selects the winner based on the association’s contribution to the residential, land development, and renovation industries, and it’s also based on the ability to raise awareness about the industries within their local communities.

“Through the hard work of members and staff, BILD has had a banner year,” announced BILD President and CEO Bryan Tuckey in an email. “The OHBA award recognizes our collective effort on many fronts including: our many successes on numerous advocacy files; our hard work to improve the reputation of the industry; how we have grown our membership and have engaged many members through our educational events and philanthropic efforts in the name of our community partner, Habitat for Humanity GTA; and how we have successfully produced three fantastic home shows, bringing new products, services and technologies to existing and future homebuyers across the GTA.”

Let’s look back on a few major accomplishments made by BILD over the last few years. Starting in 2009, BILD appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board, stating that the use of the Hemson methodology of calculating soft service development charges was unfair to the industry. It took a while, but they eventually won and saved the industry $35 million.

BILD has stayed in touch with the community and industry through their monthly events and seminars, like the BILD Breakfasts and yBILD events for charity. They have also maintained a consistent newsletter, contributed articles to the Toronto Star, and ran ads in public areas to start getting people engaged in the conversation about how the GTA is transforming and growing.

Since 2003, BILD has raised more than $825,000 for Habitat for Humanity GTA and this year they are providing their 12th home to a family in need through Habitat. They have five marquee events every year to raise funds for this great cause.

Last year, BILD acquired the National Home Show, the Toronto Fall Home Show, and the GTA Home and Reno Show. After one year of ownership, hundreds of thousands of homebuyers and members of the homebuilding industry have benefitted from growing their business or improving their home.

BILD now represents more than 1,450 companies in the GTA, and they have proven to be a strong voice, representing the industry in both the public and private sectors. Congratulations to the entire BILD team, all the BILD members, and all the volunteers that have ever worked with BILD to improve our industry.
